CATALINA ISLAND

Final Payment Due (venmo @lowellsciencecamp)

Hello 5th Grade Parents!

School is well underway and I know our kids are doing their very best to stay on top of all these curve balls being thrown their way. I know the start of this year isn't what we all envisioned, but I have high hopes we can still make this a very special and final year for our 5th Grade Sea Stars.

Every year, the entire 5th grade class is invited to attend a Science Camp on Catalina Island through CIMI.  I am reaching out to inform you that registration is now open and we encourage you to sign up now. At this moment, CIMI is still planning to operate this outdoor education program in March of 2021 for us.

Lowell students/chaperones will be the only group on-site during our trip weekend:  March 12 - 14, 2021.

WHAT IS CIMI?

Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) at Fox Landing is a unique outdoor science school, providing an exciting outdoor educational experience for our 5th grade students. It is one of three outdoor science schools on Catalina Island operated by the nonprofit corporation, Guided Discoveries.  Our focus on hands-on experiential science, utilizing state of the art labs and equipment, increases science literacy and environmental stewardship. CIMI’s expert instructors guide students through island terrestrial biology, marine biology labs and field activities designed to stimulate minds, build character, develop social skills, and most importantly, create excitement about science.

During our three day program, students and chaperones participate in a variety of hands-on labs and field activities. The Fox Landing campus has many great program areas that are well maintained by the resident staff.

A few lab and field activities include:  snorkeling, hiking, astronomy, evening campfires, kayaking and learning about fish, sharks and rays, invertebrates and algae.

Your child will be assigned a cabin with a group of other same-sex students and a parent chaperone for the entire trip.  Fox Landing is a private cove and is equipped with sleeping cabins, a dining hall, science labs, touch tanks, an amphitheatre and a recreational field.
